Frequently Asked Questions

What is an ordinal inscription?

An ordinal inscription is arbitrary data that is persisted to the bitcoin blockchain. It can be an image, text, a PDF, a 3D model, or a whole array of other content types.

How do I create parent/child inscriptions?

To create parent/child inscriptions, you must already have the inscription that is meant to be the parent.

Inscribing children to the parent you already own is very simple:

  1. Pick the "Inscribe" option.
  2. Drag & drop the files that you wish to inscribe as children, or specify the content directly as text.
  3. Enter the inscription ID of your parent in the "Provenance" field. Note: the inscription ID is not the inscription number. It should look like this: 732de1acf2efa82792872ae356c5439a083f66196f311b6cdba0e392e3aeaecci0
  4. Submit and fund the order.
  5. Wait for the parent receive address to show up.
  6. Send your parent to the specified receive address. Once all children are inscribed, it will be sent to the same destination address as the children.

What is a delegate?

A delegate is an inscription that links to another inscription's content. It usually does not have any content of its own.

Delegation allows creating replicas of an existing inscription for cheap, typically even cheaper than using Recursion.

To learn more about delegation, see the official documentation.

What's the difference between parents and delegates?

Parents and delegates are completely unrelated. Parents allow you to show provenance, and to create an inscription hierarchy. They are most commonly used by artists to prove authenticity for their work.

Delegation is a cost-effective mechanism for creating copies of existing inscriptions. Delegates can be thought of as an alias, or a shortcut, that automatically shows the delegated inscription without having to inscribe it twice.

  1. Pick the "Inscribe" option.
  2. Drag & drop the file you wish to inscribe, or specify the content directly as text.
  3. Press the "Create Gallery" button.
  4. Specify the inscription IDs of the exhibits you wish to add to your gallery. Each gallery item/exhibit may optionally have a title and traits.

What's the difference between parents and galleries?

Galleries can be curated by anyone, and do not show provenance. They are merely an assortment of inscriptions somebody decided to group together.

On the other hand, children can only be inscribed under an inscription by the person in possession of the parent.

Metadata

What is metadata?

Metadata is arbitrary additional information that may be associated with the inscription.

How do I add metadata?

To add metadata, when specifying your inscription content, click the "Attach Metadata" button, and pick a JSON file from your computer to use as the metadata. Chisel will automatically convert it to the necessary format.

How is metadata different from traits?

Traits are similar to metadata, but are structured, and have to follow a strict key-value-paradigm.

How do I add traits?

To add traits, when specifying either your inscription content or your gallery items, click the "Attach Traits" button, and pick a JSON file from your computer to use as the traits. Make sure the root of your JSON file is a dictionary, and that all the values are either strings, numbers, booleans, or null.

The service fee comprises a base fee of 15,000 satoshis, as well as a per-file fee of 375 satoshis per kilobyte, rounded up.
